Collection: Simon Bisley Artist Biography and Art Gallery Collection

Simon Bisley is a British comic book artist best known for his 1990's work on ABC Warriors, Lobo and Sláine. Born in England on March 4, 1962, he began drawing when he was six years old. He is self-taught, with only a short one-year stay at an art college. Starting with doing magazine and album covers, his first work being a T-shirt design for heavy metal magazine Kerrang. Eventually, even though Simon Bisley had no experience in comics strip drawing at the time, was hired by the Magazine 2000 AD after they saw his interpretations of their magazine characters. Simon Bisley started with work on ABC Warriors in 1987, later moving to Sláine and Judge Dredd.

Since 1997, Simon Bisley is a regular contributor of the comics magazine Heavy Metal. He was part of the British Invasion to the USA in the early 1990's where he made a name for himself at DC illustrating Lobo. Primarily he did covers (such as Doom Patrol) and the occasional interior for DC. The Biz illustrated covers and the occasional interior for Hellblazer from issue #259 right up until its ending issue #300. He also has done design work for several music videos, including Chippendales' "Room Service".  As of 2007, Bisley is an occasional contributor to the comics magazine Heavy Metal and has most recently done a cover for a new comic book company based in Hong Kong called Fluid Friction. He also plays drums in a death metal band named Kaotika.

Simon Bisley has a unique style, reliant on paints, acrylics, inks and multiple-mediums, which he says is strongly influenced by Frank Frazetta, Gustav Klimt, Salvador Dalí, and Richard Corben. His distinctive style is predominntly rendered using acrylics on bristol board; Simon does not regularly use airbrushes, contrary to popular belief, but he has been known to use car spray paint and various other household items to achieve his amazing results. He also took inspiration from rock album covers and graffiti as well as traditional comics art. In turn he and his work has inspired various forms in media, including the Beast in the 2006 Doctor Who episode The Satan Pit, and Simon Pegg's character graphic artist Tim Bisley on the Channel 4 sitcom Spaced. Simon Bisley is considered the king of extreme painting for the comics world. He is currently credited with the artwork in 597 separate comic book issues.
