Steve McNiven Artist Biography and Art Gallery Collection
Steve McNiven is a Canadian comic book artist born in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1967, but raised mostly in and around Ontario, Canada. His mother was an art teacher which inspired him to obtain an education in art by attending Nova Scotia College of Art and Design where he earned a BA in Art Education and a BFA in Sculpture. When his wife was offered a job in Toronto he began working part-time as a visual arts teacher at the high school. In Toronto he stumbled upon a comic shop with a co-op art studio and befriend a group of local comic book artists. A fan of comics, anime, and manga, Steve McNiven decided to try his skill at hand drawn art working in a cartoon like style inspired by his interests. His wife wanted him to pursue his interest and bought him a ticket to the San Diego Comic Con in 1999. He made a small portfolio of his art and technique and attended the event displaying his work to any company looking for talent. Eventually, a chance encounter with the Lai brothers led to the artist being hired at the Florida based company CrossGen. He left his home in Canada to move to Florida and work for CrossGen. There, he took over the penciling duties following the departure of Josh Middleton, who left to work for Marvel Comics, and Steve McNiven began a partnership with inker Dexter Vines, which continues to this day.
Steve McNiven went to work at Marvel Comics when CrossGen closed down and they put him on a number of projects. He gained more fame working for Marvel Comics as the penciller of Marvel Knights 4, Ultimate Secret and New Avengers. He followed this by provided the art for the Wolverine story line "Old Man Logan" and the Icon Comics mini-series Nemesis, both with Mark Millar. His big break, however, occurred in 2006 when he and Vines, along with writer Mark Millar were contracted to create the Civil War mini-series, which turned out to be the highest grossing comic book project of the decade. This team became so popular that Steve, Dexter and Mark were brought together again to produce the Old Man Logan Wolverine storyline for Marvel in 2008, who made his first appearance in Wolverine #66 in June of that year. Currently, Steve is working on Uncanny Inhumans with Charles Soule. The artwork of Steve McNiven is currently credited in 387 separate Comic Book issues.
